Michigan Behavioral Consultants, P.C., was founded in 1997 by Eric Willmarth, Ph.D. Dr. Willmarth had already been working for 10 years with the physicians of Michigan Pain Consultants and it was with their encouragement that he developed Michigan Behavioral Consultants to expand behavioral medicine and psychological services available to the chronic pain population.
Working closely with pain management physicians, physical therapists, and primary care physicians, the team of behavioral medicine therapists at MBC provide psychological assessment and treatment for a wide range of problems.
Psychologists and social workers provide behavioral medicine services in 12 locations throughout Michigan. Michigan Behavioral Consultants now has offices in Grand Rapids, Big Rapids, Greenville, Holland, Portage, St. Joseph, and Muskegon providing a wide range of behavioral medicine services.

Eric K. Willmarth, Ph.D.
Is the founder and president of Michigan Behavioral Consultants, P.C. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Fielding Graduate University after receiving his Master's Degree from Eastern Michigan University and a Bachelor's Degree from Grand Valley State University. He has worked as a Clinical Psychologist for over 40 years, over thirty years specifically in Pain Management.
Dr. Willmarth is a Diplomate of American Academy of Pain Management and is BCIA certified in both Biofeedback and Stress Management Education. He is an Approved Consultant of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and a Fellow of the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. He is also a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.
Dr. Willmarth has served as President of both the Michigan Biofeedback Society and the Michigan Society of Clinical Hypnosis on multiple occasions over the years. He has also served as president of all three of the major National Hypnosis Societies in the US. He currently serves on the Board of the Behavioral Medicine Research and Training Foundation
In addition to his clinical work at MBC, Dr. Willmarth is on the Faculty of Saybrook University where he serves as the Chair of the Applied Psychophysiology Department and the Coordinator of the Specialization in Integrative Mental Health in the College of Integrative Medicine and Health Sciences.
Specialty areas include work with Chronic Pain and other chronic medical conditions as well as problems such as depression, anxiety, habit disorders, phobias, fibromyalgia, and Attention Deficit Disorder. In addition Dr. Willmarth works with musicians and others seeking optimum performance improvement.
Craig Vander Maas, Psy.D.
is a licensed clinical psychologist. He received his doctorate in psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology after obtaining his Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University and his Bachelor's degree from Aquinas College. Dr. Vander Maas has also completed an additional Master's Degree in Clinical Psychopharmacology from Nova Southeastern University and has also completed post-doctoral training in the field of Neuropsychology. Dr. Vander Maas's practice is limited to psychological and neuropsychological assessments, including evaluations for dementia, ADHD, substance abuse and mental health issues, pre-surgical evaluations, and narcotic risk evaluations. He also provides pharmacological consultations for physicians.
Sandra Strandquist, LMSW
received her Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Utah after obtaining her Bachelor's Degree from Colorado State University. She has provided mental health services for over 15 years with children, adolescents, and adults in individual, couple, and family sessions. She has worked as a part of a sexual abuse treatment team and has years of experience working with chronic pain and trauma. Ms. Strandquist works with issues such as anxiety, depression, divorce adjustment, parenting concerns, women's issues, and sexual abuse. She is certified in clinical hypnosis and uses this for the treatment of chronic pain, smoking cessation, and weight loss. She is also experienced in biofeedback and in stress management.
Barbara Beerthuis, LMSW
received her Master’s in Social Work Degree and Bachelor’s Degree from Western Michigan University. She provides counseling services for individuals, couples, and families. She has experience working with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, chronic pain, women’s issues, sexual abuse, relaxation skills, pain management, and stress management skills and biofeedback. She has extensive experience working with senior adults and their families, as they work through the transitions that may occur. She is a Certified Focusing Professional and Trainer. She is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is an effective treatment for trauma.
Jason Randall, Psy.D.
Dr. Randall received his doctoral degree from Loma Linda University, California, and a Certificate in Primary Care Mental Health from the University of Northampton, England. He received his undergraduate degree from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Dr. Randall combines various therapeutic approaches to work with patients not only on their chronic pain, but also to develop meaning and quality of life.
Bonnie Brown, Psy.D.
Dr. Brown is a licensed clinical psychologist and senior disability analyst-diplomate, with an expertise in forensic evaluations. She successfully completed the Federal law Enforcement Training Academy in 1995 and between 1995-2001 held various administrative positions within low to maximum security federal and state correctional facilities. Since 2001, her practice has exclusively focused on assessment and consultation and for the past 17 years, she has provided consultative examinations for disability related claims. In addition, she conducts assessments and provides expert opinion on a variety of criminal and civil concerns including, veteran’s benefits, sex offender evaluation and risk assessment, as well as learning disorders / attention deficit disorders. Dr. Brown is contracted with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to provide pre employment screening for all law enforcement candidates as well as fitness for duty evaluations for the city of Las Vegas and Clark County and continues to provide these services in Las Vegas on a quarterly basis. She is a founding member of the Sex Offender Task force, lobbying for stricter sentencing and supervision requirements for sex offenders in the State of Nevada between 2002-2008 as well as the Protection for Sexually Exploited Children Task Force; decriminalizing trafficked youth, and providing treatment as well as safe haven.
Just prior to joining MBC, Dr. Brown served as Clinical Director for Summit Pointe Community Mental Health. During her time with Summit Pointe, she assisted in the formation & training of the first multi agency Crisis Intervention Team – a cross collaboration between law enforcement & mental health providers. While her primary focus is assessment, Dr. Brown has a passion for advocacy & treatment of trauma survivors with certifications in critical incident stress debriefing and as a clinical trauma professional.
Dr. Brown grew up in the Lakeshore area and is thrilled to have finally returned home to West Michigan!
Kandis received her Master's Degree in Social Work from Western Michigan University after obtaining her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology emphasis on Women's and Gender Studies from Grand Valley State University. Kandis has a diverse background working with youth and families, women in crisis, adults with severe and persistent mental illness, and adults receiving integrated health care for chronic health conditions. She has more than 5 years experience working in a fully integrated health care clinic utilizing a variety of evidence-based practices to activate patients in managing their physical and mental health. Kandis has experience working with depression, anxiety, complex trauma, PTSD, personality disorders, psychosis, stress management, chronic pain, and substance abuse. She is a certified substance abuse counselor and trained in clinical hypnosis and biofeedback. Kandis has a strong belief in the power of the collaborative therapeutic process and strives to build on individual strengths while empowering clients to achieve their identified goals.
