Michigan Behavioral Consultants, P.C., was founded in 1997 by Eric Willmarth, Ph.D. Dr. Willmarth had already been working for 10 years with the physicians of Michigan Pain Consultants and it was with their encouragement that he developed Michigan Behavioral Consultants to expand behavioral medicine and psychological services available to the chronic pain population.

Working closely with pain management physicians, physical therapists, and primary care physicians, the team of behavioral medicine therapists at MBC provide psychological assessment and treatment for a wide range of problems.

Psychologists and social workers provide behavioral medicine services in 12 locations throughout Michigan.  Michigan Behavioral Consultants now has offices in Grand Rapids, Big Rapids,  Greenville, Holland, Portage, St. Joseph, and Muskegon providing a wide range of behavioral medicine services.

    Eric K. Willmarth, Ph.D.

    Is the founder and president of Michigan Behavioral Consultants, P.C. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Fielding Graduate University after receiving his Master's Degree from Eastern Michigan University and a Bachelor's Degree from Grand Valley State University. He has worked as a Clinical Psychologist for over 40 years, over thirty years specifically in Pain Management.
    Dr. Willmarth is a Diplomate of American Academy of Pain Management and is BCIA certified in both Biofeedback and Stress Management Education. He is an Approved Consultant of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and a Fellow of the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. He is also a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.
    Dr. Willmarth has served as President of both the Michigan Biofeedback Society and the Michigan Society of Clinical Hypnosis on multiple occasions over the years. He has also served as president of all three of the major National Hypnosis Societies in the US. He currently serves on the Board of the Behavioral Medicine Research and Training Foundation

    In addition to his clinical work at MBC, Dr. Willmarth is on the Faculty of Saybrook University where he serves as the Chair of the Applied Psychophysiology Department and the Coordinator of the Specialization in Integrative Mental Health in the College of Integrative Medicine and Health Sciences.
    Specialty areas include work with Chronic Pain and other chronic medical conditions as well as problems such as depression, anxiety, habit disorders, phobias, fibromyalgia, and Attention Deficit Disorder. In addition Dr. Willmarth works with musicians and others seeking optimum performance improvement.

    Craig Vander Maas, Psy.D.

    is a licensed clinical psychologist. He received his doctorate in psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology after obtaining his Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University and his Bachelor's degree from Aquinas College. Dr. Vander Maas has also completed an additional Master's Degree in Clinical Psychopharmacology from Nova Southeastern University and has also completed post-doctoral training in the field of Neuropsychology. Dr. Vander Maas's practice is limited to psychological and neuropsychological assessments, including evaluations for dementia, ADHD, substance abuse and mental health issues, pre-surgical evaluations, and narcotic risk evaluations. He also provides pharmacological consultations for physicians.

    Sandra Strandquist, LMSW

    received her Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Utah after obtaining her Bachelor's Degree from Colorado State University. She has provided mental health services for over 15 years with children, adolescents, and adults in individual, couple, and family sessions. She has worked as a part of a sexual abuse treatment team and has years of experience working with chronic pain and trauma. Ms. Strandquist works with issues such as anxiety, depression, divorce adjustment, parenting concerns, women's issues, and sexual abuse. She is certified in clinical hypnosis and uses this for the treatment of chronic pain, smoking cessation, and weight loss. She is also experienced in biofeedback and in stress management.

    Kandis DeShaw, LMSW

    Kandis received her Master's Degree in Social Work from Western Michigan University after obtaining her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology emphasis on Women's and Gender Studies from Grand Valley State University. Kandis has a diverse background working with youth and families, women in crisis, adults with severe and persistent mental illness, and adults receiving integrated health care for chronic health conditions. She has more than 5 years experience working in a fully integrated health care clinic utilizing a variety of evidence-based practices to activate patients in managing their physical and mental health. Kandis has experience working with depression, anxiety, complex trauma, PTSD, personality disorders, psychosis, stress management, chronic pain, and substance abuse. She is a certified substance abuse counselor and trained in clinical hypnosis and biofeedback. Kandis has a strong belief in the power of the collaborative therapeutic process and strives to build on individual strengths while empowering clients to achieve their identified goals.
